Are email notifications working for anyone? They don't seem to be working for me so I don't know when topics I've subscribed to have a reply

maybe i mis configured the forum.
any other feedback would be appreciated.

also il you know how to approve post automatically , would be nice too. i'm new to phbb

I think it's the new user post limit in settings (I haven't administered phpbb for a long time). Essentially every new user has to post a certain amount of times before their posts are automatically approved. I think you can disable it in settings.

Can you sort so we can get email notifications?

I'm subscribed to the topic (which is default as the post creator). Subscribed to a topic should mean I get email notifications of any replies.

their help forum gives help on older version menu are totally differents
