Hypermotard 821 2014 with IAW 7SM.D0 ECU can't read VIN nor request license

Hi all,

I have an Hypermotard 821 from 2014 which mounts a Magneti Marelli IAW 7SM.D0 ECU.

I tried two different ELM327 modules, one is v1.5, the other is unknown.
When I use MelcoDiag, I can't get the VIN and the app asks me if it's model 2011 or 2012, which is neither of those. Regardless of what I choose, I get same result.

If I try to request a license for MelcoDiag, the ECU diagnostic textbox is as below, and it's not enough data to request a license.

Has anyone faced the same issues? Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong here?

it look like both of your elm are not compatible, or ignition is off or you are not connected to the right port on the bike

Thank you very much for your response.

I tried a third adapter, which shows as v1.5, see picture below. Same result. Ignition is on, MelcoDiag won't get VIN or any other bike data. IAWDiag instead shows Ignition off even though I have it on.

I am using the only diagnostic port available on the bike, which is a 4-pin conenctor with 12V, GND, CANlow, CANhigh paired with an adapter cable to make it into the full size OBD port.

I saw some videos online of people successfully connecting using a rev 1.4 or 1.4b but I can't find any adapter online with this older revision (

I am truly running out of ideas. Tried some Android apps that can all connect successfully with the OBD adapters, but none of them can connect to the ECU.
I even tried a CANbus transceveir with an ESP32 and I can see the stream of data on the CANbus line, but that won't help since they're just HEX codes and can't be interpreted without an OBD device...
